Audio/Video Intern

The Audio/Video Intern is directly responsible for recording and editing audio/video content for OkayAfrica & Okayplayer, taking projects from raw capture to final delivery. The intern will gain a keen understanding of the post production workflow, including syncing, assembly, audio mixing, and graphics implementation. Adaptability and a sharp creative eye are essential to meet the evolving technical needs of our team.

The ideal candidate would have the following:

  • Assist in setting up and operating recording equipment (microphones, mixers, audio interfaces) for interviews, podcasts, and voice-over sessions.
  • Record and engineer high-quality audio, monitoring levels and ensuring clarity during sessions.
  • Edit and clean raw audio recordings to remove mistakes, background noise, and filler words.
  • Mix dialogue, music tracks, and sound effects to create a balanced, professional, and broadcast-ready final product.
  • Assemble and arrange audio segments for long-form content like podcasts, including adding intros, outros, and advertisements.
  • On-Set Production Support: Provide hands-on support during on-location and in-studio video shoots by assisting with equipment setup and breakdown, operating boom microphones to capture high-quality audio, and acting as a production assistant (PA) to the entire crew.
  • Audio Distribution & Platform Management: Prepare, format, and manage the final uploads of all audio content to Digital Service Providers (DSPs) such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts, ensuring all files meet industry standards for public distribution.
  • Media Management & Archiving: Meticulously organize and archive all raw audio files, project sessions, and final masters according to the company's workflow, ensuring all assets are easily accessible for future use.
  • Post-Production Collaboration & Delivery: Act as a key liaison between audio and video teams by delivering final mixed audio tracks to editors and providing collaborative support to ensure a seamless and efficient post-production pipeline.

We are seeking a candidate who is deeply immersed in the culture we represent and is eager to build a foundation in media production. This role is a key support function for our creative team.

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • A deep and authentic passion for Black culture, with a strong knowledge of its musical evolution, including Hip-Hop, R&B (from the 90s to present), Afrobeats, and Amapiano. This is crucial for informing your work in audio editing and scoring.
  • Proficiency in an audio editing software/DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is required. Hands-on experience with Adobe Audition or Pro Tools is highly preferred. Familiarity with Logic Pro or Ableton Live is also a major plus.
  • A portfolio of personal or academic projects that demonstrates your skills and aptitude for audio production, music creation, or on-set sound recording.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with a keen eye for detail that is essential for archiving audio files and managing uploads to DSPs.
  • A fundamental understanding of various social media platforms (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) and how audio drives engagement within video content.
  • A collaborative spirit with strong communication skills, ready to support the production and post-production teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • The ability to work on-site at our Brooklyn office 3 days per week and be based in the NYC metropolitan area.

Areya Media, Inc. offers the following compensation package:

  • Hourly salary: $16.50/hr
