Part-Time | 1099 Independent Contractor
We are seeking a skilled and dependable Remote Sign Language Interpreter to provide virtual interpreting services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students in K12 schools across Michigan . The interpreter will support students access to instruction and communication through real-time American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation in classroom settings, individual sessions, and school-related eventsall delivered remotely.
The interpreter will work closely with educators, special education teams, and families to promote inclusive learning environments, helping to ensure students meet their educational goals in accordance with their IEP or 504 Plan.
Live Interpretation :
Deliver accurate, real-time ASL interpretation of classroom instruction, discussions, assessments, and school activities via virtual platforms.
Adjust interpreting style based on age, language level, and academic content.
Collaboration & Preparation :
Coordinate with teachers to review lesson plans and prepare for class sessions in advance.
Participate in IEP or support team meetings as needed to ensure alignment with student communication goals.
Student Support :
Facilitate effective communication between DHH students and peers, educators, and staff.
Promote independence and engagement by supporting students full participation in all learning environments.
Professional Conduct :
Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional standards per the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
Follow educational interpreting best practices in compliance with IDEA and Michigan special education guidelines.
Education :
High school diploma or GED required; associates or bachelors degree in ASL interpreting or a related field preferred.
Licensure/Certification :
Must hold a valid Michigan Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Certificate through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).
EIPA score of 4.0 or higher or RID certification (NIC, CI/CT) strongly preferred.
Experience :
At least 1 year of experience interpreting in a K12 school setting preferred.
Previous experience with remote/virtual interpreting is a plus.
Technology Skills :
Proficient in virtual platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet).
Able to use secure interpreting tools and troubleshoot minor tech issues independently.
Strong expressive and receptive ASL skills
Understanding of educational interpreting techniques and student learning needs
Culturally responsive and inclusive approach to communication
Familiarity with Michigan Department of Education (MDE) guidelines for DHH services
